Early morning walk in the Antigua Guatemala plaza
The photographer doesn't always want to pack the Hasselblad on a
walkabout and so sometimes the Minox will do, especially with the
assistance of PhotoShop to widen the view. But more to the point what
is this place?
Antigua Guatemala has the history of being the old capital of
Guatemala. It was moved when too many earthquakes suggested the
present capital site would be more prudent. At one time there were
more churches and monasteries here than there were homes of citizens,
be they indigenous Maya or Spanish. At least that is the claim of the
current locals. The Spanish supervised Mayan construction of the
architecture, sometimes with humorous results. When one walks by this
building on the south side of the plaza, the irregularity of the
columns is fun to study. And yet there are moments when one might
think he is in Seville, at least until the details are checked out.
