Field table top photography presents challenges
This old guy was John Abercrombie with whom
Rick worked on the Guatemala archaeological project. He made all the
equipment work and provided transportation. Hillman would ride with
him because he could handle Spanish and Latin customs.
The other thing Abercrombie did was gun smithing. Jeweling--the
swirling texture on the barrel and other internals--and hand grips
were his specialty. Hillman got one of the last pieces he built, above
it's a Bersa 32 automatic, made in Argentina and stored for 30 years
in cosmoline. For all intents, it's new.
The photo used a strobe and a diffuser floating over the subject.
